 Casa Batllo
Located on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, Casa Batlló is a Spanish building by the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. It was built in 1877. The building was renovated by him between 1904 and 1906 for the textile magnate Josep Batlló i Casanovas. As with Casa Milà just down the road, there is nothing angular here: everything is undulating and rounded like the waves of the sea. The facade is covered with mosaic reminiscent of the scales of a fish. The columns on the ground floor resemble the legs of dinosaurs and the undulating mosaic roof the backbone of a huge monster. The balconies look like huge jaws of sea creatures, springing out of the sea, as it were. The central theme is of the dragon slayer Saint George.

 Casa Mila Barcelona
Casa Milà (1906-1912) is an apartment building by architect Antoni Gaudí and it is one of his best-known works. The building was built under the patronage of the noble Milà family. Casa Milà is located on Passeig de Gràcia (Paseo de Grácia) in Barcelona. The outer walls are wavy. The building is also called La Pedrera, which is Catalan for The Quarry. That name refers to the appearance of the building and originally had a pejorative meaning, because the building did not meet any of the architectural standards in force at the time.

 Granada
After Granada was reconquered by the Christians in 1492, Granada became the seat of an archbishop. In 1501, the Catholic Monarchs decided to build a new, large cathedral on the site of the city's main mosque. However, from 1507 this was first used as a cathedral for decades. The new cathedral was to have a burial chapel for the kings as an annex. Construction of this Gothic-style royal chapel began in 1505, a year after the death of Queen Isabella I of Castile. Construction was continued by Ferdinand II of Aragon and was completed in 1517, a year after his death in Granada Spain.

 Pompeii
Pompeii (also: Pompeii or Pompeji) was an ancient Roman provincial city of about 20,000 inhabitants that existed from the 7th century BC to the first century AD. Osks, Samnites, Greeks, Etruscans and Romans all left their marks. Pompeii, which in 62 AD. had already been hit by an earthquake, it was covered in ash in 79 as a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. As a result, it has become one of the best-preserved Roman cities, although the excavations have been accompanied by erosion and pollution. After the first remains were discovered at the end of the 16th century, archaeological excavations have been carried out since the 18th century. Since then, large parts of the city have been uncovered and the site gives a well-preserved picture of Roman daily life. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction that attracts some 2.5 million visitors each year.

 Vaticaan Rome
The Sistine Chapel (Italian: Cappella Sistina) is the most famous chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the Pope's residence in the Vatican City and often seen as part of the Vatican Museums. It is one of the most famous interior spaces in the world, because of the famous frescoes by Michelangelo and because it is the room where the cardinals meet in conclave to elect a new pope. For this conclave, an extra chimney is placed on the roof of the chapel, from which smoke comes out twice a day during the conclave. This depends on the outcome of the black or white smoke voting rounds, so that people in St. Peter's Square can see whether or not a new pope has been elected. The smoke can also be seen outside of Rome. It will be shown live on TV as soon as it comes out of the chimney, so that even people who are not in Rome can see whether or not a new pope has been elected.

 Versailles
It is one of the largest castles in the world and one of the most visited sights in France (more than five million visitors a year, three quarters of whom are foreigners). In Dutch, as in many other languages, the Palace of Versailles is often spoken of. In France and also in other countries, however, the name palais is only used for a building in the city, a similar building in the countryside is called château. The castle of Versailles was originally located in the countryside (the city of Versailles was later built next to the castle by order of Louis XIV) and moreover it was originally a real castle that, due to the renovations, acquired the allure of a "palace". In 1624, a red brick and sandstone hunting lodge was built for King Louis XIII near the village of Versailles.
